ldconfig returns the results:

libmidgard.so.7 -> libmidgard.so.7.0.0

Having done a search on libmidgard*, all the library files reside in
/usr/local/lib and are libmidgard.a,.so.7.0.0,.so.7,.la and .so

Thanks for the tip for cache - have changed the permissions to 711

Just as a thought, could that segfault be anything to do with mysql rather
than php specifically? Looking at phpinfo() it is reporting that mysql=/usr
so I assume it is linking out to the external mysql libraries.

Piotras thank you for all the help and endless patience you have given me.
I won't give up on apache 2, but I will have to leave it for now as time is
pressing on other matters. The conversion down to apache 1 went smoothly
and everything is back up and running properly again. I have set aside time
to look at this problem further and have a few more ideas to try.

Cheers and thanks to everyone for their help.

711 should be better IMO

If you really need to do this, you should recompile midgard-apache1 and
midgard-php4.
Nothing else.
