Thanks! That line should be added to the FAQ. It yielded this result:

server through
socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
My MySQL server isn't running on the localhost, it's on a different
one. I
thought I had configured this correctly when I used datagard to
import the
database. Is there a different place to set up the MySQL connection?

Quoting Johan Bernhardsson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
The cache dir is not read by apache .. its read by midgard libraries.
You can add MidgardDebug directive in the vhost configuration and
check
that log.

And besides, shouldn't it mention that in the debug output I
pasted below
from
the apache logs? Same problem, no change in results.

Checked so apache can read /var/lib/midgard and read+write
in /var/cache/midgard ?

I installed Midgard 1.7.0 on my SuSE 9.3 system today, using
apache2.
I
installed all the midgard*1.7.0 rpm files, and all dependencies. I
have
