I agree, an alpha release in it's current state wouldn't be a bad idea.
I 'd also like to release my project based on a non-SNAPSHOT.

we could get rid of the dependency on the Apache snapshot repo.
I ask for this, because the Apache snapshot repo seems to be
unavailable right now :(
