Whether I can actually implement this setup depends on this question:
Is there a way to do two-way server-to-server synchronisation with ownCloud
6 (or maybe with 7)?
No, there isn't. Mostly because you first need to figure out how to deal
with conflicts (which can always happen in a two-way-sync-scenario).
Cheers,

I would assume that could be done in the same way conflicts are handled
between client and server now. A conflict copy is created and it's up to the
user to decide what to do with it.
Creating conflict copies is the sole job of the client. The server has no
business in them. So when there is a split brain situation between the
servers, how would a resulting conflict be traced to the two clients (could
also be two web interfaces that cause it btw). It's not that simple...

I see. One way to do it, would be to create conflict copies in a per-user space
and sync that to all clients of that user (invisible to other users). That would
require no change to the clients and would even work with the web interface. The
downside, of course, being that conflicts might become spread out to any number
of clients of that particular user. I have to admit, I don't even know how
ownCloud currently handles more complex cases (eg. files/folders being renamed
while others make changes to them...).
The other way to achieve the kind of performance improvement I am aiming for,
would be for the clients to discover and transfer files directly with between
one another on the LAN. Are there any plans to implement a feature like that?
