Yes, this is primarily what I was reacting to.
So let's take a closer look at what I mean by that and why this
certainly does *not* mean that I want to kill hierarchies. In contrary.
Good! Thanks for clarifying.

As for *additional* organizational methods, I don't see why anyone would object, except perhaps the developers who would have to maintain it :-)

But I am skeptical about:

 * how useful meta-tagging would be for most people? Some file formats
can embed metadata; if you're going to create it, it's nice to embed
it in the doc, but you'd have to duplicate it in an external DB to
support other file formats... complicated & a redundant duplication
of effort. [I used to work for the Department of Redundancy
Department...] But mainly, I just think most people won't take the
time/effort to maintain meta data... and of course tag
interpretation can change over time as much as directory hierarchies.
 * filename parsing to automate metadata.... I use a file format that's
basically "Who_What_When"... those 3 separated by underscores. So
very often I could pick the date off the filename as everything
after the last "_". But even someone as picky as I am is still
inconsistent. E.g., with tax forms I may use "2015Q1" instead of a
full date. And hope of any consistency between all users is an
   obvious impossibility....

In summary, if it were added as an option, great, no harm. But I don't miss the lack of it myself.

Best Regards,

Mike
