I had this problem several times. too.
I solved it by using a template excel sheet which had been created by
Excel and then was being read in by POI using POIFS. I modified this
sheet and wrote it back to the disk. It could be opened without
problems.
So just create an empty or almost empty sheet in excel and use this
sheet as your basis to work on.

I have missed something in my previous post. Actually the excel sheet opens
correctly but if I try to save it or edit it and save it then it is closing
with the error message.
