Right, have done a bit more digging and found that OpenXML4j is still in what
the developers refer to as 'pre-alpha' status. As a result, it's
functionality is likely to be limited and there is a distinct lack of
documentation. Still worth a look IMO - indeed I am playing around with it
currently and have hit problems with logging of all things.

Later today, I am going to play around with the ODFToolkit. It is targeted
at OpenOffice odt files and I do not know if it will even open an OpenXML
document but I fully intend to try; after all what harm can it do?

Finally, I came across a project at Sourceforge called Aperture;

http://aperture.sourceforge.net/ http://aperture.sourceforge.net/

It is designed to scavange information from files and does include a class
aimed at reading OpenXML files. Whether it is possible to use it to create
or merge files is a moot point but there may be something there.

The best - in terms of features - that I have been able to find so far is -
unsurprisingly - Microsoft's own OpenXML SDK, however, as mentioned earlier,
it is targeted at the .NET framework and so I cannot see how to make it work
with Cocoon. I doubt that even using Mono (
http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page
) you could finesse this problem.

It may be that you are best creating your own application - or perhaps
working with the developers of OpenXML4j - to accomplish this task. On the
one hand, I can see how to deal with the styles problem but do not have any
idea how problematic it would be unpacking, modifying and then re-packing
the docx file.
