Right, forget the ODFToolkit idea, it was not able to successfully open the docx file and I do not hold out too much hope for that approach sadly as it is quite a 'mature' API.
OpenXML4j was able to open a .docx file successully and so I think that could be worth your time. If you download the api, get the source as well because it contains a number of example programs that will undoubtedly help you get to grips with the api. In order to use OpenXML4j, I fouund I also needed to obtain log4j, dom4j and Xerces.
