I created the same application using Netbeans with Tomcat 5.5 in Windows.
It failed the same way when setting/getting values in/from cells. It is
true that I am accessing an Excel file which has more than 15 sheets and
many external links to other 3 xls files. I am not sure what causes
actually the failure but it looks like Tomcat 6.0 is a better choice
when things gets complicated in involved Excel files.
I had to set also JAVA_OPTS to Xmx=512m

misleading to declare that it has something to do with the differences
between Tomcat 5.5 and 6.0. Did you actually *reproduce* the bug on
*Windows* this way (by publishing the app to Tomcat 5.5)? Please
write back and confirm if this is the case. Otherwise it's safer to
assume that the real fix was some other change perhaps classpath
related.
