I think it is necessary to link the worksheet to an external data source to do this, something that would normally be done from within Excel itself - starting by clicking Data on the ribbon. How you could accomplish this from within POI I do not know. Also, that is think, as I am far from being an Excel guru.
May I ask please, is the workbook you have in the older binary format (an xls) or the 'newer' xml based one (an xlsx)? If the patter, I would be inclined to unzip the archive and have a dig around.
