Take a look at admin-menu.xml and editor-menu.xml in the WEB-INF. They
determine which menus are show to which user roles. I think you can
simply add the 'admin' role to items you wish to hide from 'author'
users.
However, this stuff is 'undocumented' and could conceivably change in
future releases.
