I have no idea but here is my 2 cents worth anyway

* I didn't know there was a JCA 1.4. I thought there was a *1.0* and a 1.5
* JCA 1.0 did not support inbound communication
* The ServiceMix JCAFlow uses a bunch of other APIs new to JCA1.5
* ServiceMix is littered with JCA work management code which was also 
only introduced in JCA1.5 afaik
