I'm sort of a JSF newbie and I've had a hard time seeing the advantages as well. But I think the light is beginning to flicker just a bit. One very clear advantage I noted is that you don't have to do the stupid security-constraint trick to block people from viewing JSP pages. Shale handles that in a filter (I think).
