Found one other issue:
The uima-as build in Trunk is set up to depend on uimaj-core at version
2.4.0-SNAPSHOT. That no longer works, because in December, we released 2.4.0 -
and the snapshot cleaner-upper has now removed 2.4.0-SNAPSHOT from the snapshot
repository.
I'll correct the uima-as build to depend on uima version 2.4.0 (without the
-SNAPSHOT).

maybe you got caught by a maven optimization. Maven, when it fails to find
something in a repo, remembers that it failed to find it and doesn't look
again. In the first note: it reminds you of this when it says (see 2nd
paragraph)

Now that you've succeeded in building the uimaj base SDK, try rerunning the
uima-as build using:
mvn -U clean install
The -U flag makes maven try and re-resolve things it didn't find earlier.

Correction: I should have said for step (5) "cd ../uima-as/uima-as".
