XFire is around and will continue to be around. We will be making bug fix releases for the forseeable future.
CXF is where the main feature development is occurring though. If you have already written services using XFire the idea is that you can migrate with as little pain as possible. The services you have written for XFire should run on CXF as well with little/no modification. The thing that will change is the configuration/deployment code. As with any major release, this is bound to change. Even if XFire did not become CXF, there would be changes in how services were deployed from version 1.x to 2.0.
