Is that some requirement to not ship the *.la files?
It's WOS policy. These libtool turds are not at all useful on Solaris.
Sorry, I'm terrible at acronyms, what is WOS and where is it documented?
Wad Of Stuff. It's the entirety of Solaris. It's been in use for 20
years; I'm not sure that it's documented specifically anywhere.
So, to understand the current status, would it make sense to have
userland gate infrastructure to warn about any *.la files delivered by
*.p5m? Or even better, make that an error, overridable from *.p5m file?

I've filed:

7143056 Userland consolidation should remove .la files and warn/error
  against new ones
  http://monaco.us.oracle.com/detail.jsf?cr=7143056

to cover this.

Thanks.
