Thunderbird for sure - that is the one I was watching the logs for when I was seeing BAD responses.
I'll look at this further - I'll admit I was not so sure of the patch but worked on the basis Thunderbird was mature enough to be well behaved and not issue bad commands and that looks to have been a wrong assumption.
