Can you confirm that the default application generated by the archetype
runs OK ?
(If you did not delete the files generated by the archetype, you should be
prompted
by the "apex" commandline tool to select one from the list of 2
applications present
in the archive; choose the first).

I'm trying to determine whether it is something about this particular
application that
is problematic or whether all applications fail. That will then tell us
where to look next.
