Would there be a way of using the users Windows Active Directory credentials to automatically log into the Cocoon Portal?
It certainly is possible. Cocoon's authentication framework uses a pipeline to perform the authorization. I wrote an Authentication Generator to use with JAAS. I don't see why doing the same thing using Active Directory would be any different. You might want to search the mailing list archives as I seem to recall that topic from a while back.

This is shame. I understand that Universal search should be a given for a serious portal product?
I'm not sure what Universal search is. Cocoon supports Lucene. Is that the same thing?
