but if you do know of any books on writing services and DAOs, then I would be in a better position to help bridge them!

PS Is using J2EE *really* required for db transaction apps??servlets are also a part of J2EE. You can use spring on Tomcat or Jetty. Spring does not use any super advanced J2EE technology. YOu can even use it in simple application.
