sendfile is fs specific aswell. it doesnt work on smbfs etc which seems quite weird. -Jonas

The part which gets easily forgotten is that sendfile() as special purpose interface is not replaced by that -- since it can directly interact with the VM cache, it can more intelligently decide how to "lock" the affected memory range.
