Well, of course it's *solvable*. You could also (in principle) detect if you're running interactivly, or are being called from a script, and adjust the output accordingly.
But it's just not a good idea. Principle of least surprise, the Unix philosophy, keep it simple, and all that.
This is all pretty off topic for the list though, and I don't feel like arguing about it.
