Dear all,
I've tested OOo 2.0 beta2 recently, especially the new Base application. I'm
familiar with a number of database management systems and use MS Access
frequently. As Base wants to compete with Access it should make things better
that Access does bad and things equally good that Access does good.
Unfortunately it is quite the opposite in some aspects currently.

1. Nearly all modern MDI (multiple document interface) applications nowadays
provide a small X button below the bigger X for closing the whole application
that closes the current MDI window. In Base you have to use the menu and point
to File => close window which is not really intuitive
2. To define the primary key in a table the only way to do this is using the
context menu. Context menus are fine, but should never be the only way to
accomplish a task, in my opinion. It shouldn't be a great effort to put a
button in the toolbar to do the same.
3. An absolute annoyance in Access is the reformatting and changing of SQL-code
you are typing, after changing to the design view (this happens by accident
sometimes). Now Base does absolutely the same and partly even worse. I'm aware
that Base is designed for novice users and those seldom deal with the SQL view.
Despite that, I believe that systems can be designed for both novice and expert
users. I see no reason for users familiar with SQL to surrender a comfortable
GUI (e.g. for table design) just because otherwise they also buy interference
with their SQL code.

It's sure to late to consider these notes for OO 2.0, but maybe there is soon a
2.0.1 that can provide some enhancements there.
Regards
René
