Don't think so. This is the behaviour as long as I know StarOffice/OpenOffice.org, and I think it's as simple as: neither me nor anybody else involved with development/QA/UE ever questioned this. It sounds reasonable to me to have some kind of feedback for the user, be it the control displaying differently, or some more obtrusive message. So feel free to submit an RFE.
