Is that the bar at the bottom that says "Embedded database" and "HSQL
database engine?" It's whatever type Base creates by default.

The database I want to connect with is "BetterPest.odb."
What does the status bar at the bottom of Base' main window show you?
(.odb is too generic to know the DB type, but the status bar can tell
the concrete type.)
