one more idea (well, internally still the same as before: a wrong
version found somewhere):
Which version of HSQLDB is in fact loaded when you connect to a
non-embedded HSQL database? See [1] for how to find out.

As I learned recently in some other issue, there in fact is software
which installs older versions of HSQLDB into the JVM's classes
directory, *not* as hsqldb.jar, but under a different name. This version
then wins over OOo's version, which causes trouble.
