wow quick answer... yes is a Mandriva 2007 box with MySQL 5.0.37 and OOo
2.3 (vanilla)
Which version of MySQL ( 5.0.x or 5.1.x ) and which JDBC version driver
are you using?
I am using Java 1.6 and MySQL Connector/J 5.1
Finally, what client application are you trying to connect from?
not sure about this one, I am connecting on localhost but 'might' migrate
this db to the production db on a remote server.
