One of the reasons might be that before we used to have a true "unified"
desktop environment (earlier StarOffice versions were Desktop centric),
and that this was done away with in order to make StarOffice and OOo
more modular. So what we have gained in component modularity, we have
perhaps lost in context, or perhaps these db components were so
integrated in the Desktop service that their separation left a few
unfilled gaps ?
It would take someone who has been on the development team for a long
time, i.e. when StarOffice was a unified product, to be able to tell us
what happened (although it was Sun's idea to split up the desktop
environment and much ink was spilt at the time discussing the merits of
this decision :-) )
