That's the weakest point. Developers aren't necessarily good tech
writers (including myself, even though I consider me a pretty ...
gossipy man). And certainly most people don't *like* writing technical
documentations (including myself) - so since this is not enforced, it
seldom happens. Which is no excuse, of course.
I agree: technical writing requires skills not only a highly qualified
developer may lack of, but also a simple user willing to contribute; so
that's why there are in the Documentation Project people who are
soft.eng.+ tech. doc. specialist.
In an specialized world still remains the problem that this soft. eng. +
tech. doc. specialist may not have the background to cover all required
areas - I still remember Jean Holis Weber's goodbye-words:
"I don't have the necessary background or knowledge to fill in the
conspicuously missing gaps in the OOoAuthors guides, for example the
*Base* Guide [...] -- much as I would like to write them."
Concerning the lack of SDK examples, I am involved in porting all the
SDK examples (sdk/examples/DevelopersGuide and sdk/examples/java) as
NetBeans Projects (because the Developer's Guide is moving to the Wiki,
and the examples will not be included in the SDK anymore).
After finishing the first step (reading line-by-line and testing every
example, then making the NB Project, updating old API where necessary ),
I have plans to translate every example to C++, and OOo Basic (if
possible, i.e. not UNO component for Basic, of course), and at least
document missing examples of important features (so that people can look
at it and contribute with missing examples).
The list of missing examples for OOo Base is, as one can imagine, huge:
the Dev's Guide examples seem to be from a pre-OfficeDatabaseDocument
age. So here most [... all] important features are missing.
When I get to sdk/examples/DevelopersGuide/Database and
sdk/examples/DevelopersGuide/Forms [this one is in better shape than the
previous one], sure you'll be hearing from me, asking for "which is the
best practice for this or that?" and the like.
