Hi --

I've been trying to work on this project on and off for a year or two now and keep giving up because the learning curve gets to be too much. Decided to give it another try and I'm stuck right from the start line.

I have the database set up, registered, a couple of tables with data -- no problem.

When I view data sources in my spreadsheet, they come up fine, and I can do, so far, anything I want with them *except* get the data into the spreadsheet.

When I try to drag 'n' drop a field into the spreadsheet, the "Text Import" dialog opens, but then it locks up and I have to kill the OOo from the task manager.

Ideally, this is not how I want to use the database -- too clunky -- but I figured this would be a good start. Oops! :-D

I found an old message (from 2005) referencing a similar problem, and issue 39146, but that was marked "fixed" long ago, so I don't think that's my problem.

Okay -- while I was typing this message, the drag 'n' drop completed -- so it took about five minutes. I'm trying it again and it's still sitting there. Resources problem? Anything I can do to speed this up so it's actually useful? CPU is at 10% or less.

Hi Tam,

Can ask a question first.

You say you drag and drop a field into the spreadsheet and the "Text
Import" dialog opens. That doesn't sound quite right to me.

By chance have you tried ( or are you doing ) it this way.

Open your Calc file. Open the datasource browser ( F4 key ). In the
browser open the Base file with the data.

If you want to import a full table you can select a table icon from the
left pane of the browser and drag it to a cell,
If you want to import a few rows, you open the table in the browser,
hightlight the rows you want and drag them to a cell.

This should bring the data directly into the sheet.

Could you let us know if that is how you are dinig it now, and if not,
if it made things better for you?

Thanks

Drew

Hi, Drew --

Following your instructions with a new spreadsheet with else nothing in it, it works as expected and as you set forth with no problem and no delay, both with the full table, as well as with a single cell (and this is the way I was trying to do it yesterday). The contents of the table, or the selected row(s) are immediately placed in the spreadsheet cell(s).

(I hope this isn't TMI, but thought it would help if you knew what I was trying to do.) What I have is a spreadsheet that I wanted to use as a kind of form -- though that might not be the right word, since there are no form controls in it. It's a form to track genealogical research. I have a cell for localities, i.e., City, County, State, where the event occurred. I have a table that contains these, and I just wanted to drag 'n' drop the place name, rather than have to retype it. But when I try to do that in the "form" I've created, I get the behavior I originally described and, as a matter of fact, tried it again after successfully doing it with a "blank" spreadsheet and it's still locked up, as before. The "Text Import" dialog comes up, and OOo is frozen -- as a matter of fact I can't even get the spreadsheet -- or any other open OOo windows -- to focus while it's doing that. I imagine it will "pop-up" at some point here pretty soon. :-)

So, basically, there must be something about my spreadsheet "form" that's causing this problem, but I don't have a clue what that might be (it's not a large one -- probably less than one page). I checked the format for the target spreadsheet cell, and it *was* a number format, so I changed that to text, tried again, the "Text Import" dialog came up, and it's stalled once again. After quite awhile, it "wakes up" and I can click "okay" and the data that I want *is* in the cell, but it would be much faster to just type it. :-D

I have advanced since yesterday, though. I'm now creating "real" forms from my database. And, as an aside, your posts in OOo Forum are proving *very* helpful in this regard. :-)

Thanks!
