MysQl has no SSL mode for sending the data to the client.
I think you can't put it this way. SSL support is available in general:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/secure-using-ssl.html
Ok this is a newer version then I tested. So I don't know if JDBC or
ODBC can already use this features

Allow me to hook in once more. I don't want to blame you but make sure the search engines give the full picture on SSL.

SSL Support has been introduced with MySQL 4.0.0,
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/secure-connections.html . The first alpha of MySQL 4.0 was released in October 2001 and it became GA/production in 2003.

I don't know when the drivers started supporting it. The C-API was probably the first to support it. The ODBC driver is based on the C-API. However, that means nothing - I don't know when ODBC/JDBC started to support it! I would be surprised if it was later than 4.1 (October 2004).

As we are talking about old releases, note the Lifecycle Policy at http://www.mysql.com/about/legal/lifecycle/ . Active support for 4.0 and 4.1 has ended already. 4.0 is under extended support until the end of 2008 and 4.1 will get no updates past the end of 2009.

If you still run MySQL 4.0 or 4.1 you should consider upgrading to a newer version.
