Hi
Almost there... works on Windows as well. Perhaps I can find a way to remove "create a new database" in the Base wizzard welcome page and let the 2 other active. That will suffice.

Thank you Drew for this interesting link.

Base is somehow almost there regarding corporate IT concerns, because it can access remote databases with its drivers. The issue raised is the creation of a local (desktop) database file. Ideally (corportation-wise) is to let Base only acess remote DB under IT control. The initial Base versions (1.x) had no local engine, which is the situation desired.

hmm - then I suppose you hit on it in one of the earlier emails.

As a test I renamed two files in my 3.0 installation (vanilla OO.o under Ubuntu)

/opt/openoffice.org/basis3.0/program/classes/hsqldb.jar -> hsqldb_old.jar
/opt/openoffice.org/basis3.0/program/classes/sdbc_hslqdb.jar -> sdbc_hsqldb_old.jar

With this done I then used the database wizard to create ODB files that connected to my Thunderbird address book, a dBase file, two different Spreadsheet data sources (ods and xls) and MySQL via jdbc - seems that everything is working.

On the other hand if I try to create a database with an embedded HSQLdb engine then an error dialog opens to inform me that it can not find the sdbc_hsqldb.jar file...

At least it's a start..
