It was not obvious to me that it would do this... I took a look at the
documentation, but did not see any mention.

Download the report builder extension from here:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/reportdesign
* start the office and open the extension manager (TOOLS/EXTENSION
MANAGER)
* add the report designer extension
* open any database
* use 'Create Report in DesignView ..' from the Report panel
=> the SUN Report Designer should appear
You should be able to add an image field to your report!
