Drew, Barbara, Marc,

Thanks for thinking about my problem. I'm thinking I will simply manually
do it as the fastest method. I was hoping for a software based method to
handle this when I get a lot of records.

I want to build my report forms in writer and place the fields from the
database in the report and print it with the record I have selected. I just
have such a hard time with the report builder but getting writer to look
like my clinical forms is much easier and placing the fields from the
corresponding record seems like it 'should' work.

Did you try Marc's solution, perhaps with CHAR(13) instead of CHAR(10)? Does your data have multiple paragraphs (which would break the simpler of his solutions) or empty paragraphs internally (which would break the other one)? And Drew's solution should work as long as none of the "problem" characters are interspersed with each other at the end, or even then if you replaced a concatenation of them with the ~ or whatever. Where did you get with these?

There are actually two kinds of report builder, one that is part of Base proper and the Sun Report Builder (SRB) extension. The second is apparently much more flexible, although I have no experience with it yet myself. Like you, I designed my reports in Writer and then filled them in from the database. It sounds as if you'll be using Mail Merge, which should work fine, either directly from the table or from a query result set.

Enjoy your break!
