About three years ago I began making OpenOffice.org available on the school
network that I manage.  I fought hard to get OOo accepted as our standard
office suite when MS discontinued support for Office 2000.  Unfortunately I
lost that fight as almost every staff member whined that they needed MS
Office 2007, which is now installed on almost all staff computers and on
many student computers.  The best I could do was to try to make sure that
our users could edit their files in either suite with a minimum of problems,
and so I configured Office 2007 to save in the legacy Word, Excel, and
PowerPoint formats by default.

Now I am switching our campus to LibreOffice, and with its ability to save
to OOXML I have another option which leads me to my question.  From a purely
technical perspective of interoperability and document fidelity, would MS
Office users be better off saving word processing, spreadsheets, and
presentations in the legacy MS formats or in the OOXML formats?  In other
words, which filters in LO are more compatible with MS?

I understand that some people have strong feelings about OOXML and its
inclusion in LO.  While I respect and sympathize with those feelings, those
arguments have already been thoroughly made elsewhere.  I respectfully ask
that any opinions here be based solely on technical merit.  Thank you for
