Regarding this issue, it's most probably related to the specific graphics card and/or monitor. I do not think there are hard-coded values for monitor resolution in Ubuntu or any other distribution. Typically the X server (X.Org) reads the available resolutions through the monitor cable (see about EDID at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_display_identification_data ). So, what you should do 1. Install the 'read-edid' package. 2. Run 'sudo get-edid | parse-edid' 3. Put your /var/log/Xorg.0.log at http://pastebin.ubuntu.com and write down the URL. 4. Post the information at UbuntuForums in order to get support.
