In KDE >=4.4 one can drag the window title bar to the sides of the screen and the window manager automatically sizes the window at full screen height (minus DE panels) and half-screen width (minus DE panels), aligned to the side of the screen to which the window title bar was dragged (or next to DE panels on that side).
