I think that you have to use the simple "Save" option and the document will save with the format that you are using.
The first time it put a message that says that it isn't save and when you click ok, it go to save option. At this time you have to select the format that you want to use for it. For the rest time that you use the simple "Save" option, it save as it was save the first time. Whe you chose ".doc", it put a message if you want to keep the format o change ... but it has a chek box to select it won't appear again.
