Hi :) I think you might need to back-up your data, perhaps everything in your /home folder using rsync rather than copy&paste in order to keep the permissions all the same. You might need to install rsync or even grsync (the g gives it a nice gui).
Can you back-up to external drive or onto a networked drive?
