Hi :) I think a few people would disagree! MS's OOXML format is officially an "Open" format defined by an ISO standards. Of course in practice these things are difficult to get exactly right so people have to keep buying the newer MS Office in order to use the newer set of quirks where things don't quite work as per the specs.
Some people might be experiencing deja vu as this is allegedly roughly what happened with the Rtf format except that Rtf was never the main format used by MS and was only meant as a format to allow interoperability with non-MS programs. It was only the default in Wordpad.
