What version of LO are you using? I have 3.4.5. I did just what you
did to make .doc the default format when saving. Then I opened a new
text document labeled Untitled 1. entered some text and click Save. I
did not change the name of the document, but I did click the Save
button. The document title changed at the top to Untitled 1.doc. Also, I
located a new file, Untitled 1.doc in my home folder where I saved it.
One other point: if you are sending you doc files by email, you
might try this:
File > Send > Email as Microsoft Word. With this, you can save the file
as an .odt file and then send it as a .doc file. For example, save the
file as simple.odt. Sending this file as an email as Microsoft word, and
your email client opens an email with the attachment sample.doc.
Something to think about.
