Hi :) I usually find png is a better format for editing but jpg is lighter-weight which is only really a factor if you are emailing them or putting them up on a web-site. For a slide-show it's probably better to keep them as pngs anyway.
I don't know about Macs but in Gnu&Linux (such as Ubuntu) then addign one type of functionality in 1 programs adds it to all other relevant programs too. So if you have Gimp or some other photo-viewer on your machine and can get that to handle jpgs then LO will be able to handle jps too. However, i think it's best to stick with pngs.
