I would remove all traces of LO with "Synaptic" and any OpenOffice stuff
as well. I know Ubuntu's "Synaptic" shows some. Also it tends to show
the older version of LO when I thought I removed them with other ways.
Then do the dpkg again.
Do the desktop-integration first, then add the language pack, then the
help pack. That should be the correct order.
LO's debs
desktop integration's deb
language pack's deb[s]
help pack's deb[s]
That was the only way that seemed to work for me using Ubuntu. I use
both Ubuntu 10.04/GNOME and 12.04/MATE and that is the order of
installing I used since LO came out.

If you read the whole message you would have seen in the signature

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
i've tried using apt-get and am unable to uninstall. Atm, its working
though.
English GB, and helppack english GB
Thanks
Sharon.
You might try using Synaptic to remove then reinstall or sudo apt-get
remove <libreoffice>. I am not sure of the exact name(s) you need to
use for apt so I tend to use Synaptic.

i've just installed almost successfully libreoffice 3.5.5 except i
installed the helppack before the language pack. consequently my
desktop integration is mixed up with missing shortcuts in the menu.
how do i get them back please?
At the moment i have to open calc before opening writer, so how do i
change it please?
Thanks
Sharon.
What OS? Sounds like a Linux one, but it needs to be told. If Linux,
what was your install method?
Have you tried to reinstall LO 3.5.5?
Which language and help packs?
