Hi :) I think you are on the right path. The programs often give you more and better options if you run it from the command-line. The cute front-end deals with normal typical uses but the command-line tends to have let you access a bit more power. To find out what it can do try (in this case)
simple-scan --help That's 2 x - symbols. Sometimes just -h works, so simple-scan -h Unfortunately it looks like simple-scan doesn't do the whole job you want. I tried. Then i just opened my package manager, synaptic, and used the search tool to look for ocr and got tons of results that looked good. A few look well worth trying. Perhaps cuniform gocr gocr-tk (to get a front-end for gocr) ocrad ocropus (apparently developed in the mid-90s and used by US Census bureau) tesseract-ocr (alegedly one of the most accurate OpenSource ocr readers. Originally developed by HP) unpaper (to prepare scanned images to look smarter and make them easier for ocrs to read) I did try a search for "scanner" but got loads about network scanners, ports scan and evena couple of anti-virus scanners to scan Windows machines on the same network and stuff. Another path that might be faster to check is to just open the image with Gimp and see if there is a text layer so you can copy&paste the number that way. It seems unlikely but it could lead to something if it does work. Does Png allow layers like Gifs do? Thanks, It is kind of stuck on the fact that I do not have a scanner. Also, couldn't find explicit mention of OCR, but I guess the menu chain Document -> Scan -> Text might be doing that. Seems there is some confusion here or perhaps I am not able to grasp the idea / use Simple Scan. I have a .png from a website that rost52 suggested I can pass through OCR so that I do not have to manually copy some numbers from it. Simple Scan does not take .png (or any file) as an input. (Right?) I checked under Simple Scan preferences, the source choice doesn't have "file" / "browse" facility. I have Simple Scan 3.2.1 Am I using simple scan correctly? Is there a way to separate the OCR part of Simple Scan application from the scanning part?! I mean from the menus itself, not getting down to the code!
