I thought I had previously been able to rename a data range, but can't see
where/how to do that.

Instead of renaming, do I need to just define a new range and delete the old
range, or can I rename the old range?
It is currently not possible to rename a database range. The request for it is
in https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162319
Thank you. That is a very informative bug thread; I had no idea how little I
knew on this topic.
The only way I see for you is to edit the file source itself. The name itself is in
an element <table:database-range> in sub-file content.xml. But you also need to
exchange it in all formulas that use the name.
Delete and new is not a good solution because you will lose all sort and filter
settings associated with the database range.
Thanks for that warning, but fixing all the references and associations took
less time than closing the file to edit content.xml, so that is finally what I
did. I appreciate your efforts to make this process less cumbersome.
Kind regards,
John
