The biggest problem with running Chef or Puppet is that you have an extra
package to install. When you mention Ruby to people, they immediately think of
web applications.

I think a lot of people are more comfortable with C/C++ or even Java
applications, with Ruby you need the Ruby interpreter & libraries installed on
EACH of the managed nodes.

I am not against Chef or Puppet, but if there is a simple package that is
written in C/C++, and is much simpler to learn, then I am more willing to use
auto configuration management. In the end, the common tasks are not that
complicated, why would one need to learn a new language?

While I have more experience with IBM Tivoli & Puppet, I am really
impressed with the Chef EC2 module. And Chef is gaining quite a lot of
momentum lately. E.g. Dell recently open sourced Crowbar, which is an
OpenStack installer based on Chef.

I will wait for Puppet Enterprise 2.0, which is supposed to have new
EC2 & VMware provisioning & orchestration capabilities, and see how
Puppet compares with Chef before I decide if I am switching to Chef.
But configuration management is real and it can cut down a lot of IT
infrastructure maintenance.
