Hey there folks,

First I should tell you all that I have next to no experience with
Grid Engine. A few weeks ago I was brought into a research lab
because they finally realised they needed someone with Sys Admin
background, and I have a couple of decades of that.

We are running one of the last Sun versions of Grid Engine before the
Oracle buyout, and we want to upgrade.

I did some reading on the situation, and initially decided to go with
Open Grid Scheduler since it seemed to be the most direct child of
what we have now, and should therefore have fewer problems for us in
upgrading.

Of course, that one requires that I build it myself, and while I do
have lots of experience building packages for *NIX over the last 20
years, I do like the new direction *NIX (in particular Linux) has
taken with pre-built packages that free up my time for more important
things.

And this morning I saw your email about your new release, and these
lovely RPMs for RHEL 5 and 6 (we run RHEL 5).

So I'm reconsidering my decision :-)

I really just have one big question : is this likely to be a smooth
upgrade path?

I am told that our use of our current Grid Engine is pretty basic
(whatever that means).

What sort of questions do I need to ask about our current installation
in order to know how smooth the upgrade would be to Son of Grid
Engine?

thanks,
-Alan
