Those settings affect whether the global login scripts are sourced or not, and which command line interpreter is used to execute the script, and adding to the mix, "login_shells" did not include bash in SGE 6.2u5, but is included in GE 2011.11. So if the nodes are using local config, then make sure that all the configs are the same. Also, by "fail", you mean fail to start, fail to run, or incorrect output?
