I tested Jinmei-san's hypothesis.  But, it still seems working fine on
my box.  
I suspect that gif is not installed as a cloneable interface in your
kernel correctly.  I have no idea why it occures.
Please try `ifconfig -C'.  It shows list all of the interface cloners
available.  Here is mine:

        ume@piano:104> ifconfig -C
        gif
