A GSM modem should be more comfortable for integration, as it is designed to connect
to a stationary computer and comes with a fixed power connector, a connector setup
designed to interface permanently with a serial port and an external antenna. it also
dispends with the unnecessary and often troublesome (for stationary setups) battery.

As for functionality with Kannel - this is basically the same, and problems you
encounter with a mobile handset you will probably run into with a similar GSM modem.
that being said, different handsets behave differently and so are modems.
